Upcoming Second June Payments for Supplemental Security Income Recipients

Upcoming Social Security Payments : Recipients of the Social Security Administration’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program can expect their second June payments within the next three weeks, providing a financial boost of up to $914 for individual filers.

Payment Date and Frequency

The SSI payment will be disbursed on Friday, June 30, which marks the second payment for the month of June. The initial payment was issued on June 1. This unique occurrence is a result of the Social Security Administration’s schedule,

which grants recipients two payments in months where the first day of the following month falls on a weekend. In this case, the second June payment replaces the regular payment for July due to July 1 falling on a weekend.

Varying Payment Amounts

The amount beneficiaries receive can differ based on their filing status. Individual filers are eligible for a monthly payment of $914, while couples filing jointly receive $1,371.

Essential persons, who reside with SSI recipients and provide them with essential care, receive a monthly payment of $458. These payment amounts are determined by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

About SSI Program and Eligibility

The SSI program complements regular Social Security benefits for retirees by providing monthly payments to adults and children with limited income and blindness or other disabilities.

To qualify for SSI, individuals must be over 65 years old, partially blind, or have a physical or mental condition that significantly restricts their daily activities for a period of at least 12 months or is likely to result in death.

Adjusted Payment Schedule

The adjusted payment schedule ensures that beneficiaries receive a total of 12 checks each year, accounting for months with two payments and others with none. In 2023, there are four months where two payments will be issued:

March, June, September, and December. This arrangement is due to the first day of the month falling on a weekend or holiday in April, July, October, and always on January 1.

A Brief History of SSI Payments

The SSA initiated SSI payments in January 1974, with payment rates increasing over the years to account for cost-of-living adjustments since 1975, as reported by the agency.
