LIHEAP utility payments: How much you can get in each state to help pay for air conditioning

Low-income home energy assistance program recipients may receive some money for air conditioning in their homes this summer, though the amount will vary by state.

The LIHEAP program provides federally funded assistance to recipients to reduce the cost of home energy bills, energy crises, and minor energy-related home repairs. This program benefits households with low incomes, particularly those with a high home energy burden, or those with elderly, disabled, and/or young children, according to health and human services officials.

Almost all 50 states offer heating payments as well as crisis payments, with each state defining a crisis differently. There are, however, 22 states which do not provide cooling payments, such as Massachusetts, Alaska, and Ohio.

LIHEAP payments and how much one can receive from this program can be found in the following list of states.
