Americans claims for $200 payments : The deadline to claim the maximum $200 payment from the grocery chain’s $8.75million surcharge settlement has passed. Here’s how you can apply
There are just 10 days left for eligible Americans to submit claims for $200.
It comes from an $8.75 million settlement with Safeway, an Albertsons Cos grocery store.
The Oregon Department of Commerce accused Safeway of tricking Club Card members into thinking they were getting a buy-one, get-one-or-two-free deal.
Safeway charged a fee on non-grocery purchases in its Portland stores, according to a class action lawsuit.
According to the settlement website, Safeway normally sold boneless pork chops for $4.49 per pound, but under the BOGO deal, that price was raised to $12.99 per pound.
Beef, chicken, and pork prices were also increased.
Customers claimed Safeway unlawfully imposed the one percent clean energy surcharge on their revenue after Portland’s one percent clean energy surcharge passed in 2019.
Ultimately, the company settled the case, resulting in equal payments for all customers.
Please note that all payments are capped at $200 per person, but may be lower depending on how many claims are filed.
There is a deadline of June 16, 2023 for submitting a claim. The online form can be filled out for that purpose.
WHAT ARE YOUR ELIGIBILITIES?
Specific guidelines must be met in order to qualify for the payments.
Purchasing certain meat products from Safeway stores located in Oregon is part of this process.
A buy one get one free or buy one get two free promotion must also have been available on the products.
Last but not least, the cash can only be received by those who used a Safeway Club Card between May 4, 2015, and September 7, 2016.
ACTION IS NEEDED
A eligible shopper has four options: do nothing, submit a claim, request inclusion, or object.
The payment of approximately $200 can still be received even if shoppers don’t do anything.
Any claims resolved through this settlement will, however, waive their rights to sue independently.
Direct payments in the amount of approximately $200 will be sent to you if you received a notice via mail or email.
If you wish to submit a claim, then you have that option as well.
A claim must be submitted by those who do not believe they should have received a notice by mail or email.
Postmark or receive all submissions no later than June 16, 2023.
You opt out of receiving payments if you are excluded.
It is also necessary to postmark or receive the opt-out forms by June 16, 2023, whether submitted online, mailed, or emailed to the Settlement Administrator.
In addition, those who object will have the opportunity to explain why they believe the proposed settlement is unfair, unreasonable, or inadequate.
