Which States Are Part of the IRS Direct File Testing?
The IRS is launching "Direct File," a user-friendly, interview-based service that can be accessed on
Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers. This service will be available in both English and Spanish.
For taxpayers residing in nine states without a state income tax—Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington,
and Wyoming—there's a chance to join the pilot program for their federal tax returns, as announced by the IRS.
Furthermore, the IRS has collaborated with Arizona, California, Massachusetts,
and New York to integrate their state taxes into the Direct File pilot for the 2024 filing season.
To ensure the program's effectiveness, the IRS will initially introduce Direct File to
a select group of eligible taxpayers in the 2024 filing season.
As the season progresses, more eligible taxpayers will gain access to the service to file their 2023 tax returns.
